I had a rather interesting discussion the other day which prompted me to pose this question for discussion. A friend of mine, who is a teacher in Chicago is having a disagreement with her husband over where to send their kids to school. She, although an employee of Chicago Public Schools wants to send their 2 sons to a charter or pay tuition for a private school. He, who is also an educator in the public school system, thinks it is hypocritical of her to not consider public education for their kids.
Is it unethical for public school teachers & administrators to refuse to send their own children to public schools??
With my background in public education I know many parents in the situation above who, although work for public schools, choose to send their children to charters or private institutions. They feel that public schools, at least here in Chicago, do not provide adequate educational & social experience. With dismal graduation rates which are even more disturbing for young black & Hispanic males, I can certainly understand why those working for the system hesitate risking their children's' educational futures. However, there are a growing number of people who feel "if it's good enough for you, it should be good enough for your kids". What do you guys think?? I've also posed this question on a friend's FaceBook discussion forum as well. I didn't want anyone to have to go through the trouble of "friending " my friend so I took screenshots of responses. Here they are:
